Toronto's The Supers, who in a former life were a Montreal band (then
Toronto) called Fall Down Go Boom, have been impressing a who's who
of Canadian music types and turning heads in the U.S. with their finely-crafted
power-pop. This record is an acoustic interlude, with loping pedal-steel-accompanied
ballads and covers that will endear the band to Blue Rodeo fans before
Weezerites. It starts with a wistful, harmony-driven cover (the semi-obscure
Get Here Soon by Adam Faux) that out Cashes the Cash Brothers, but
toward the end some songs get mired in folk-hokeyness. The result
is a mixed bag 3/5 stars.
